These are mainly one-time events or workshop series. (scroll down for all details, including registration/payment information)

There are no Saturday workshops currently scheduled, but we plan to have another Performance Clinic at Lafayette Grill on a Saturday afternoon, probably in February. Check back for an update.

Breathwork for Performance workshop with Ranya: Jan. 28, 1:30-3:00pm Fee: $20. ($15 if prepaid with other workshops).
Learn how to open up as a dancer and performer, connect with fellow dancers and audience members, create more fluidity in your movements, and relieve stage fright. All levels of dancers and interested movers in any form are welcome. This workshop is for those new to working with the breath in movement as well as for those looking to deepen their practice. Sundays Jan. 28, Feb. 11, and Feb. 25 (with guest drummer Gamal Shafik), 3:30-6:30pm
Fee: $50 per workshop if paid in advance/ $60 at the door; workshop with Gamal $60 in advance, $75 at the door. $135 for all three workshops, prepaid by Jan. 20, or $150 if paid at door on Jan. 28.
The doctors are in! Help is here for freeing your shimmy, controlling your shimmy, strengthening and lengthening your shimmy! Shimmy Queens Ranya and Shoshana will offer participants a range of techniques to address all your shimmy issues, with an understanding of the anatomical and energetic aspects of different kinds of shimmies. Over the course of the series, several kinds of standing, sitting, kneeling(!), and traveling shimmies will all be covered, with a special focus on Egyptian-style layering. The workshop with Gamal will include "zagharafa" decorative technique for drum solo and drum breaks, combining shimmies with accents and working with dynamics of drum rolls.

Arabic Music in Motion: The Singer and the Dancer, a workshop with Ranya and singer/oud player Maurice Chedid
Sunday Feb. 18, 4:00-6:30pm. Fee: $50 if paid by Feb. 1, $65 after or at the door.
Learn how to work with a live Arabic singer during your dance performance--we'll cover different vocal styles including mawwal, layali, and songs, working with singer-dancer communication; considerations for classical and beledi songs; additional practice with the distinctive character of the oud. The first half-hour of the workshop will include a showing of classic footage on video of famous Egyptian dancers and singers working together onstage and in films, to give participants an idea of the traditional style.

GUEST ARTISTS:

Maurice Chedid (oud, vocals) studied at the Lebanese conservatory of music and toured widely with the Ministry of Tourism orchestra before emigrating to the US in 1988. He is a composer and musician who performs across the New York area and internationally. His engaging singing and playing style is beloved by dancers and audiences alike.

Gamal Shafik (tabla), an Egyptian native, has been playing at major Arab nightclubs and accompanying dance teachers' workshops in New York for many years. His precise technique is a great match for the subtle (and not so subtle) accents of Egyptian-style dance.

REGISTRATION FOR WORKSHOPS

WEATHER ADVISORY: "Snow date" for workshops is Sunday March 4, 3:30-6:30; this is the makeup date in case any of the workshops scheduled are snowed out by extreme weather conditions. If more than one workshop is snowed out, an additional time earlier or later on March 4 will be scheduled. Let's hope that doesn't happen! :-) But please save that date anyway.

To register, payment is required. E-mail ranya @ ranya.net or call 718 706 0037 to indicate your interest or to let us know if you are putting a check in the mail; you must pay by advance deadlines to get the early-bird discounts. Please note that for all prepaid workshops and class series there are NO REFUNDS, CREDITS OR EXCHANGES possible after payment has been made. Sorry, no exceptions to this!
