NANY IS BACK – February 13-15 workshops in NYC (plus private lessons Feb. 11-17)!
Click here for more info and to register! For those who don’t know Nany, she was a big star in Egypt in the 1990s, moved to Paris, left the dance world… until Ranya convinced her to teach with her two years ago, and the rest is history! Nany has been performing and teaching at festivals from Cairo to Mexico. Her style is unique and brings back a feeling of Oriental dance that is harder and harder to find amidst contemporary dancers: an elegant, womanly, warm, extremely musical (and sometimes cheeky) style that you are sure to love! Come dance with us…

Workshops will be Fri. Feb. 13 (7-9pm), Sat. Feb. 14 (1-4pm) and Sun. Feb. 15 (3:30-6:30pm with private/semiprivate lesson slots before) at CAP21 Studios, 18 West 18th St., between 5th and 6th Aves, on the 6th floor, in Manhattan. Register at !

AND….. it’s Nany’s birthday Feb. 14 (awww, Valentine’s!), so be our date and celebrate with us for an informal outing Sat. evening.

NYC Ongoing

I’ve been teaching at the Flushing Y for (wow!) 15 years… Imagine my surprise arriving to teach this past Saturday (wearing many many sweaters) and finding that the promised brand-spanking-new studio is complete and fantastic!!!!! With amazing full mirrors. It was a dream come true!  Soon we’ll have two classes per week there! Right now the Saturday class is 2-3pm but it will be moving to 11am-12pm for the new session… and then we’ll have another class (to be confirmed) probably Wed. evenings starting soon. The lovely Rayhana teaches while I’m out of town. Plans to work on some group choreo for performance too, so join us to get in on the fun!!

Can be scheduled with Ranya. Skype lessons and video/phone coaching available, as well as in-person lessons held at Ranya’s Sunnyside Salon studio in Queens or at rental studio in Manhattan. $100/hour for 1-person private lessons with different rates for two or more students. Packages are available–ask for details.

This is going to be a fun night, performing with a great band at this notable weekly bellydancers’ hangout!

Current NYC Class Schedule

NYC improv workshops Friday eve Sept. 19 & 26!

7:00-9:00pm at 440 Studios (room 4E)
Do you ever feel like you run out of ideas when you are dancing?
Do you want to develop your confidence as an improviser and gain tools for inspiration?
Connect deeper with your audience and fellow dancers? Come join us!

Sept. 19th FOCUS: Staying Connected to Yourself and to the Audience
Build confidence for improvisation by relaxing yourself onstage and by bridging the gap between yourself and your audience. Working with Ranya’s signature “Breathwork for Performance” method, you’ll gain tools to stay receptive to the flow of energy in the space, and to claim your own power to shape that energy. We’ll address the differences between improvising “in your own world” vs. involving and working off the audience, practicing directing energy and focus inward, outward, and both simultaneously. Exercises will engage dancers’ physicality, applying muscles to the energy work, to more fully energize your improvisation and strengthen your commitment. Build your stage presence by staying in your body and in the moment!

Sept. 26 FOCUS: Musical Landmarks and Dialogues
Bridge the gap between what everyone in the room is listening to… and you! Apply your listening skills to on-the-spot selection of “musical landmarks” (points that you can grab on to with a strong movement choice), painting the music with gesture and breathwork, and interpreting the dialogues between different lines of melody and rhythm. Learn techniques for choosing your moments without freaking out–even when you don’t know the music–and for “embracing your mistakes” to disguise missteps so the audience doesn’t notice. We’ll use different styles of music to try out these techniques.
$25 per intro session ($40 for both) paid in advance (PAYPAL to or
cash/check) or $30 each at door.

Ongoing Classes

Learn the beautiful art of Egyptian-style bellydance. Dance training with Ranya is geared towards dancers who want the full package – an appreciation of the movements, the music, and the culture of the dance. Her method focuses on developing poise, strength, and a “feeling” for the dance, integrating healthy use of the breath, musicality, artistic expression, and fun!

Students of all ages, genders, shapes, and sizes who want to enhance their fitness, beauty, and self-confidence are welcome.

Amateur and professional performers are supported with theatrically oriented workshop programming to enable each dancer’s character to shine through.
