Washington, D.C.: Baladi, Finger Cymbals

Ranya will be in the Washington, D.C., area on September 9, teaching workshops sponsored by Saffron Dance.

Sunday, September 9

1-3pm:  Fearless Finger Cymbals - a foolproof method for developing strong, confident cymbal playing, on the beat! Includes common patterns for playing the segat, a helpful way to count them, how to showcase the drum rhythm and work with being on the beat while playing segat, and work to build a strong, solid connection between your footwork and your cymbal playing. This workshop is ideal for dancers who are solid with technique, but began playing zills later in their dance journey.

3:30-5:30pm: Finding your Beledi Self – Juicy, grounded technique for down-home divas! Secrets to developing that quintessential relaxed-and-strong Egyptian feeling in your dance, with a focus on abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, and connection through the legs… Key movements, improvisation skills, how to connect to accordion taqasim and react to rhythmic changes, and how to keep it simple – to really deepen your dance.
