RANYA – Commitment: Sticking with your Spontaneous Choices in Performance
The mark of a star performer is comfort with the choices that she makes in performance, and the ability to stick with those choices, right or wrong. This kind of commitment is the product of mental and physical training: being able to relax into the present moment, no matter what happens, and not to “run from” your choices, or even from your mistakes. To work on the idea of in-body and onstage commitment, Ranya will offer meditative techniques to calm the mind and build self-acceptance, as well as physical techniques using breathwork and pelvic floor engagement. Bring veils: if time permits, we’ll use them for one of the exercises.

ANASMA – The power of the arms and hands
Be present with your carriage and arms. Give life to your hands. Breathe through your fingers.
As dancers, hands finish, frame, embellish and define the movement. As actors, hand express an intention, an emotion. Dancers will start by developing their awareness of their arms, hands and fingers. Then they will work on conveying emotions through their hands and develop characters and stories. Finally, dancers will integrate this focused work into their regular dancing.

ANASMA – Catwoman – character development applied to bellydance and DeRose Method (yoga)
Become a flexible feline. Graceful, sensual, fierce, playful, adventurous, lazy, proud,self confident or catty. Using Hip Hop, bellydance, yoga techniques and a hint of floorwork, Anasma uses yoga stretches, some individual exploration, movement across the floor, and will teach combos and choreography, combos around the theme of the cat, with a touch of humor, a sparkle of sexy, spine-liberating movements. Because this workshop is focusing on character development, the best way to prepare for the session is to observe a cat or to do some cat sitting Meow! (Knee pads may be useful if you have sensitive knees).

RANYA – Character in Performance
Acting for Dancers – Explores the different moods and emotional colors that bring interest and fun to your show. This work allows dancers to bring out different aspects of their personality in performance, even working with channeling famous stars, to access their confidence and flair—going past your own boundaries or image of yourself, or bringing a new dimension to your own onstage persona.

ANASMA – Liquid Snaky Moves
Whether you are a fusion dancer or a classic bellydancer, the Liquid snaky moves will bring a new dimension to your dancing! Using Waving techniques, her strong floorwork techniques, deep theatrical root and a lot of creativity, Anasma adapts her Hip Hop Bellydance Liquid Fusion to offer hissing and flowing moves and develop the character of the Snake. Embodying the snake more literally or more figuratively, we will focus on specifically on hand and arms, then on the body, dancing on multiple planes (using the floor, the different axes surrounding the body). Anasma will propose combos and/ or a choreography.

RANYA – Along the silk road
The pairing of dancer and veil is a magical one, and taking cues from modern dance, we can discover dramatic ways of using the veil that go beyond it being just a pretty complement for the costume. With technique influenced by some of the great New York dance legends (Elena Lentini, Shoshana, and Aszmara among these), Ranya will lead participants through exercises that use tension and release in the body to heighten the physical and emotional relationship to the veil, plus expressive ways of using the veil in the space. Ranya goes over foundational technique for long veil. We’ll also work with the different personalities of the veil, and moods that can be evoked through this half-costume, half-prop. BRING: lightweight silk veil of about 3 meters in length. Ranya will have some New York-style iridescent silk veils available for sale as well.
